Opportunity for All

Music

Welcome to the Music Departments web page at Heolddu Comprehensive School

The music department is committed to delivering a curriculum that will encourage a learning environment where all pupils can develop self-esteem, attainment and personal expression.  More specifically, the music curriculum aims to develop aesthetic sensitivity, creative ability, understanding and enjoyment of music in all pupils through an active involvement in listening, performing and composing.  By working with the raw materials of music, young people can best discover something of it’s nature – its’ vitality, its’ evocative powers and the range of its’ expressive qualities.

For those pupils who show high levels of motivation, commitment and skill, it can lead to employment in the music profession, the music industries and teaching.  For many others, who choose alternative career paths, it can supply instead the foundation for greatly enriched leisure pursuits, both as listeners and as participants in music-making.  For all, it contributes to the development of transferable skills and attributes such as perseverance, resourcefulness, self-esteem, co-operation, self-discipline, goal satisfaction, judgement, critical awareness and discrimination, independence of mind, inventiveness, self-expression, problem-solving and decision-making.

Music can also enrich many aspects of education and may forge appropriate links with many other subject areas.  In addition, it can provide therapeutic and recreational benefits.
